Salt Dough Christmas Decorations

My little boy turned 3 a couple of months ago and this is the first year he understands what Christmas is. Therefore I thought it would be fun to make our own Christmas decorations. It again fits my criteria,  simple to do and does not cost the earth.

  • Half a cup of salt
  • Half a cup of flour
  • Half a cup of water
  • Gold paint
  • Pretty String
  • cookie cutters

Place the salt and flour in a bowl and mix.  then add the water a bit at a time and mix until all the water has been added.  Knead the dough for 10 mins before rolling out.

Cut out the desired shapes with your cookie cutters (we did angels and trees). Now you have two choices you can air dry or pop them in the oven on a low heat for 3 hours.  I prefer the air dry method as they tend to puff up for me in the oven. Before you dry them make a hole at the top of your decoration so you can hang it once it’s painted.  I just use a skewer.

Once the the decorations are dry we painted them with gold paint.  However you could do any colour and I don’t think you could go wrong adding a sprinkle of glitter.
